The Source by Paul Toy Yoder

Title:

The Source

Author:

Paul Toy Yoder

Series:

The Bracken Covenant, (Book Three)

Genre:

Suspense, Contemporary Fiction, Supernatural, Paranormal

The Bracken Covenant series is a modern-day fiction, delving just enough outside the bounds of reality to make the reader question “could that happen?” with deep ties to the occult and the dark myth of Dracula spawned from the Wallachian king, Vlad the Impaler.

Book Description

Few who have gone toe-to-toe with the devil worshiping cult, the Bracken Covenant, have survived. Certainly none have ever considered to have bested the cult in recent years—except, perhaps, one man. The reflective English professor, Dr. Carver, still thinks daily on his previous terrifying dealings with the fanatic group. His world is overturned as the Bracken Covenant rips his loved ones away from him. Forced to follow and to relive the horrors of the den of the Covenant, Dr. Carver plunges into the darkest, most central gathering point for the pervasive evil cult. His foes, ranging from beast, to man, to beings speculatively immortal, attempt to put an end to his, and his loved ones’, lives.... This demonic cult chose the wrong English teacher to sacrifice.

Excerpt from The Source

The grass was frozen, crystalline, showing no sign of thawing anytime soon. Breathing in the cold, biting air, Dr. Carver realized that he was on the run from a predator. For hardly ever being hunted in his life, he fell into the role of “prey” quickly—naturally—almost unnaturally so.
He ran from his pursuer, though if it was beast or man that stalked him, he didn’t know, and somehow, it didn’t matter to him.
In the farthest recesses of his mind, he felt the distant shadow of his consciousness telling him that he was existing in a dream, and he even believed it. But, at the moment, his instincts ruled his actions. He was running for his life.
Then there was a reprieve, but it was only a reprieve from physical exertion. He pitched into an icy grass clearing, collapsing on the ground, taking a moment to catch his breath. He could not shake the overwhelming notion that, even if this were a dream, the danger of being caught by this predator meant fatal consequences in the real world.
This feeling began to overcome him, and a presence of extreme strength began to manifest itself in the form of two piercing eyes, cold and staggering. He was frozen, just like the grass beneath him, showing no sign of thawing soon enough to react to the juggernaut stalker. He was helpless against this foe. The beast’s eyes made sure he knew his doom before it had even made a move.

Genre:

New Adult Urban Fantasy, Supernatural, Paranormal

Book Description

Have you ever wondered what could be hiding in the shadows?

Well, for eighteen-year-old Zahara Faraday, she doesn’t have to wonder. You see she comes from a lineage of Light Witches, those who have chosen to help protect and serve between the supernatural world and the human world. The only problem is Zahara, like her father Solomon, is as human as a human being can be whereas her mother, Mia, and her Aunt Catalina, were born as Light Witches. As a family they hunt down rogue supernaturals—creatures who harm humans or who have committed an act against their kingdom.

Zahara’s hunting skills are usually kept dormant since her parents would prefer she live life as a normal human girl without knowledge of the supernatural world. She plans on doing just that—except when she finds a couple being attacked by fairies, she has no choice but to step in. Before she can return to pretending to be blissfully ignorant, Zahara encounters a problem she isn’t the least equip to handle: Bryan Hamilton, the good looking new co-worker she has to help train. In a heartbeat, her best friend, Becca King, has set her up on a double date with herself and her new crush, Rekesh Saint-Louis, who happens to be the most powerful leader of the biggest Imago Coven in South Florida –supernatural creatures with the ability to control water . . . and suck out human souls.

Zahara has no time to focus on how she’s going to explain her double date with her best friend and the enemy they have a tentative truce with to her parents because soon one of the members of Mia and Catalina’s coven is found murdered with a strange tattoo of a snake with wings carved into his arm.

Zahara is then thrown into a whirlwind battle with an angel determined to have revenge against God, an Imago coven she doesn’t think they should trust, and slew of dream-eating fairies and powerful Nephilims, hybrid children of angels and humans, more than happy to rip her to shreds.

Normal just got a deadlier definition.

Excerpt from Lucifer

Zahara stared at her best friend in disbelief as she giggled. She rolled her eyes and grabbed the collar of Rekesh’s shirt.

“Can I speak to you a moment?” she asked, but didn’t bother waiting for a reply. She yanked Rekesh back toward the door and outside, fully aware if he hadn’t been cooperating she wouldn’t be able to move him even an inch. She dragged him over to the picnic table, which sat under a tree, and released the hold she had on his shirt. “What are you doing here?” she asked again, placing her hands on her hips.

“As I already explained, I was invited; or did you suddenly develop amnesia and forget the invitation having been extended by Becca herself?” Rekesh replied, fixing her with a steady glare. He straightened out his shirt and walked over to the table, sitting on top of it.

Zahara arched an eyebrow. “You can’t tell me you only came here because you wanted to see Becca.”

“Of course not, I am after all the irresistible-dangerous Imago, so that must mean I have a sordid plan.” Rekesh leaned forward, looked back and forth, then added in a whisper, “I plan on taking Becca back to the Darkling Hotel and have her become my votarist.”

Zahara took a swing at his face. Rekesh simply sat back, unfazed.

“You even try to kidnap my best friend and have her become—”

“Yes, I know, unbearable pain and torture,” Rekesh said with a yawn. “I do not plan on harming your friend. I have no ulterior motive. I like Becca; she’s bold and cute.”

“You. Are. Not. Allowed. To. Date. Her,” Zahara said through gritted teeth. Her eyes were siltted and her hands had formed into fists.

“You should calm down, you’ll end up attaining gray hair before you hit your nineteenth birthday,” Rekesh teased. Zahara growled at him and Rekesh sighed. “If I promise to keep things between Becca and myself platonic, will you call off the death glare?”

“She’s off limits, Rekesh, I mean it,” Zahara said and folded her arms.

“As you wish, Lady Faraday,” Rekesh said with a bow of his head.

“Can you cut the bull or am I gonna have to shank you?” Zahara threatened, retrieving the dagger from her back pocket.

“Drop the dagger,” a quiet voice spoke from directly behind Zahara.

Zahara yelped and jumped back, a shiver crawling down her spine. A pair of forest-green-colored eyes met hers, predatory and hard. She was surprised he had a blue Mohawk, and both his ears were pierced with crosses hanging from them. An orange tank declaring in bold letters ‘Fiction is Truth,’ hugged his defined chest, while a pair of black and gray checkered jeans covered his legs. He wore a pair of black and orange Converse and a black watch in the shape of a fang on his wrist.

“Zahara, meet my right hand, Leanian,” Rekesh introduced.

“Nice to meet His Creepiness,” Zahara said with a sneer. “In case your douchebag of a boss has never told you, sneaking up on a girl with a blade is never a nice way of saying hello.”

Leanian remained unmoving, staring intently at Zahara.

“Oookay then,” Zahara said, turning back around to face Rekesh. “Silent type, fits the whole Imago persona well.”

“Leanian is the more hands-on type, which proves to be far more beneficial.” Rekesh eyed the dagger in Zahara’s hand. “If you’re still planning on shanking me, I suggest you change your mind. Leanian would most likely break every bone in your arm before you took a step in my direction,” he said, not as a promise, but as a fact.

The Prophecy by C. David Belt

Title:

The Prophecy

Author:

C. David Belt

Series:

The Children of Lilith, (Book Three)

Genre:

Vampire, Horror, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, LDS, Christian, Urban Fantasy

In all the 6,000 years that the Children of Lilith have walked among us, there has never been an unwilling vampire...until now.

Book Description

An ancient prophecy, spoken by Adam, Lilith's grandfather, foretells her doom. She will do anything, corrupt any innocent, murder countless mortals to save herself.

To survive, she knows she must destroy Carl and Moira Morgan.

The war has begun.

And Carl and Moira know, win or lose, it all ends here.

Excerpt from The Prophecy

“‘Sons of God! Brood of Light-Bearer who fell!’ That is how I would render the first half.”

The message is in plain text. The email address looks like a random mix of letters and numbers, and the email provider is one that supports anonymous accounts.

I’ve been collaborating with colleagues across the country and in the U.K., Israel, and Egypt for more than a week. We’ve been trying to decipher the twenty-four syllables of Adamic (at least I assume it’s Adamic) that Lilith uttered at the battle at the farm. My colleagues are experts in Hebrew, Arabic, Egyptian, Greek, and Latin. We’ve been exchanging emails ever since I asked for their help.

Of course, I’ve told them I’m not at liberty to reveal the source just yet, but I’m certain it’s a language that predated all others, a protolanguage. In the beginning, some refused to collaborate on the project because I wouldn’t reveal my source, because I was being cryptic. But eventually, most couldn’t resist the lure of the puzzle. That’s something we all share in common, my colleagues and I: we can’t resist the potential, the lure of hidden knowledge.

And of course, I can’t tell my academic friends that the source is a native speaker. I also can’t tell them that the text is an outburst from a six-thousand-year-old vampire after she’d been impaled by the very spear that once pierced Christ’s side, a spear being wielded by a former Nazi assassin who is now a repentant vampire.

In other words, I can’t betray my friends.

The Penitent by C. David Belt

Title:

The Penitent

Author:

C. David Belt

Series:

The Children of Lilith, (Book Two)

Genre:

Vampire, Horror, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, LDS, Christian, Urban Fantasy

In all the 6,000 years that the Children of Lilith have walked among us, there has never been an unwilling vampire...until now.

Book Description

Moira and Carl Morgan have saved the city from the horror of Michael and his evil wives, but victory has come at terrible cost.

And there are consequences to every choice, every victory.

Word has spread that someone has broken Lilith's power, that someone has defied the ancient Queen of the vampires.

And she's not happy about it.

Excerpt from The Penitent

A snarl rips from my throat.

Manny releases the boy and spins to face me. He looks startled, but nae frightened. Aaron’s head snaps in my direction, but he remains rooted to the spot. He looks horrified.

The thug’s face twists in an evil leer. “Beat it, chica. This is none of your business.”

I laugh low and menacingly. “Ach, nae, rat. Ye are my business.”

I step into the shade of the garage, safely out of the muted sun-light. I throw back my hood and pull off my sunglasses, setting them on the trunk of the sedan. I fix Aaron’s eyes with my own and say with Persuasion, “Lad, go stand over there and wait for me while I deal with this.” Aaron’s expression goes slack, and he turns obediently and walks to the far wall of the garage.

I return my gaze to the gangster, who’s staring at Aaron in amaze-ment. “Now, rat,” I say, “face me. Look into my eyes and see the hellfire that awaits ye.”

Manny looks at me, his face a mask of fury. “Listen, puta . . .”

I open my mouth wide, revealing my dripping fangs.

His brown eyes go wide, and the color drains from his face. “Madre de . . . ! ”

I advance toward him, savoring his terror as I will the honeyed sweetness of his evil blood. I want to tear this vermin to shreds . . . after I consume his life.

Still brandishing the knife in one hand, he fumbles at his breast with the other and lifts a rather large and ornate gold cross on its chain. He holds it toward me as a talisman.

I cower back, shielding my face from the crucifix.

Through my fingers, I can see Manny’s face split in a leer of triumph. “That’s right, zorra. Now you know who’s . . .”

I straighten up, no longer feigning fear. I shake my head slowly from side to side, laughing softly. “Ooh, did I give ye a wee moment of hope, ratty? That bonnie bit of jewelry cannae protect ye from me.”

Carl and Moira discover that Rebecca's vampire Master, Michael, plans to unleash a plague of vampires on the city. Can Carl and Moira stop the slaughter of countless innocents?

Excerpt from The Unwilling

“Where am I?” I ask.

She hesitates a moment and then replies, “Ye are in my home. Do ye know how ye got here?”

Now I’m getting worried. “My memory’s a bit fuzzy. Sorry.”

“Ye carried a young woman into the emergency room at the LDS Hospital. She was unconscious and covered in blood. Ye were stag-gerin’ about and yellin’ incoherently. Ye frightened everyone. We took the young woman and attended to her, but ye collapsed. I thought it best nae to let the staff examine ye. So, I brought ye here and tended to ye myself.”

The girl. Yes, I remember the girl. “Is she OK?” I ask.

Moira nods slowly. “Aye, she’s fine. Some blood loss, but she’ll live. Ye did nae kill her.”

Kill her? What?

“W . . . why would I kill her?” I stammer. “What’re you talking about?”

She stares at me again. She seems to be holding some kind of internal debate. Her eyes narrow as she comes to a decision.

“Blood,” she says simply.

“What?”

“Blood. Human blood.”

I look at her without understanding, blinking stupidly.

“The drink,” she says. “’Twas human blood.”

In an instant, it all comes back to me.

Michael. Rebecca. Chikah. Benjamin. The Cult. The Ritual. Every-thing.

I think I’m going to throw up.

I lurch to my feet and look around frantically for a bathroom, a sink.

Moira is at my side in an instant. She pulls me toward the kitchen. “Dinnae ruin my carpet, laddie!”

Wow! Her grip is strong!

By the time I reach the sink, the nausea has passed. I lean against the sink all the same. The room is still spinning.

Moira gave me blood to drink. I drank human blood.

And I liked it.
